- Kodokan Judo
- Kodokan Judo is a Japanese martial art developed by Dr. Jigoro Kano in 1882. The style emphasizes throwing techniques (Nagewaza) and ground techniques (Newaza). Judo techniques are based upon leverage and the principle of maximum efficiency. Kodokan Judo is both an Olympic sport and a practical method of self-defense. On average, the Judo classes are split equally between throwing techniques and ground techniques.
- Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
- As the name implies, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was developed in Brazil. It was popularized in the United States by the Gracie family, who pioneered the art in their home country of Brazil. This style of Jiu Jitsu is primarily a ground fighting art, with emphasis on controlling an opponent on the ground and applying submission techniques to end the fight. The majority of Jiu Jitsu training is done wearing a gi (uniform); however, students also train without the gi to gain comfort applying the techniques learned without relying upon the clothing.
